What is a Remote Job?

What does it mean to work remotely? (What is a remote job?) If you're seeking a job that lets you work from home, you might encounter various terms describing this type of work. Terms like telecommuting, virtual job, remote job, and home-based job are often used interchangeably. They all describe a job that doesn't require being in a traditional office.

WFH Meaning – What does WFH stand for? WFH stands for work from home and is commonly used as a shorthand for remote work conducted from home.

Where Can You Work Remotely? It varies. According to Remote Job Career’s data, around 95% of remote job listings require the worker to be based in a specific location. This means only about 5% of remote roles are truly “work-from-anywhere jobs.”

The main reasons for requiring remote workers to be in a certain location—such as a state, country, region, or time zone—include legal and tax considerations, professional licensing, the need for on-site training or meetings, travel requirements, or proximity to clients.

Location-based remote jobs generally fall into one of three categories:

  • U.S. National jobs: These can be performed from anywhere within the United States.
  • International country-specific jobs: These are based outside of the United States.
  • City or state-based jobs: These require workers to be located in a specific U.S. area.

Jobs that allow you to work from anywhere in the world are typically fully remote and enable you to work from home or any other location of your choice.

Levels of Remote Work Remote work can vary depending on the employer’s needs. At Remote Job Career, we categorize remote jobs as follows:

  • 100% Remote Work: These positions are fully remote, allowing you to work from home full-time with no need for in-office time or travel.
  • Hybrid Remote Work: These roles require some time in the office or travel, along with remote work.
  • Option for Remote Work: These jobs give you the choice to work from home, in the office, or both.

What Types of Jobs Can Be Done Remotely? The term “remote job” refers to the location of the job, not the schedule. Remote jobs can be part-time or full-time and may offer temporary, flexible, or alternative schedules.

Remote Work Schedules Some remote jobs require working during specific “business hours,” which could be the standard 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. or something different, depending on the company. Others might require availability during “core hours,” typically a block of midday hours when most team members are working, ensuring some overlap with colleagues. Alternatively, a completely flexible schedule might allow you to set your own hours, with the only requirement being that you work a certain number of hours each week.

Freelance vs. Employee Remote jobs can be either employee-based or freelance, depending on the employer’s setup. Remote employees work virtually as part of a company’s staff, while remote freelancers or independent contractors work with a business on a contract basis.

Although both remote employees and freelancers work remotely, there are differences. Remote employees are entitled to the same benefits as traditional office workers, including health insurance, 401(k) plans, and vacation time if the company offers these to its in-office staff. Freelancers, whether remote or not, are responsible for securing their own benefits.
