About the Role

Payroll is central to Gusto’s operations, and the Payroll Services team is responsible for the customer experiences and internal services that manage payroll processing, tax calculations, payments, and compliance. As the Senior Product Design Manager for Payroll Services, you’ll lead a team of designers to simplify complex technical and regulatory requirements into user-friendly experiences for both new and seasoned employers. You'll collaborate with various internal teams to improve their processes through service design and enhance the tools they use to help customers manage their tax accounts. As part of the product area’s cross-functional leadership team, you’ll play a key role in guiding the entire product development process, from setting long-term vision and strategy to launching new features and refining existing ones.

Your Daily Responsibilities

  • Lead and empower a team of product designers, creating an environment where they can produce work they’re proud of, meeting the needs of both customers and internal teams.
  • Collaborate with other leaders to define a long-term UX vision for your product area, ensuring alignment with Gusto’s overall vision.
  • Co-lead the development of product strategy, roadmaps, team objectives (OKRs), and project direction.
  • Work with cross-functional partners in UX Research, Data Science, Legal, Compliance, Payroll Operations, and Customer Support to identify customer problems and key opportunities.
  • Enhance our understanding of customers’ payroll and tax compliance needs through research and data analysis.
  • Design and launch new projects and iterations that consistently add value for our customers.
  • Contribute to Gusto’s product design leadership by sharing your expertise and experience.
  • Advocate for and help evolve our design system and platform standards through your team’s work.

What We’re Looking For

  • 8+ years of Product Design experience, including at least two years in a management role.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead design direction across multiple teams and influence design and product decisions across different areas.
  • Experience in creating approachable, guided customer experiences in complex domains, ideally within a platform/services or enablement team.
  • Strong product acumen with experience in contributing to business and product strategy, and comfort working with executive stakeholders.
  • Technical expertise with a deep understanding of technical systems and their impact on customer and business outcomes, with experience collaborating with engineering teams to improve these systems.
  • A builder’s mindset, with a track record of leading teams to deliver customer-facing products and services, while staying engaged in the work and supporting direct reports through complex projects.
  • A high standard for quality, with a proven ability to maintain design quality and accessibility across devices while delivering value iteratively.
